Uses
Selincro (Nalmefene) is used to reduce alcohol consumption in patients affected with alcoholism. It works by modifying the way the patient feels after drinking alcohol so as to reduce the feeling of reward or pleasure. This medicine is generally used to treat patients who consume a high level of alcohol and who are not showing physical withdrawal symptoms and when detoxification is not immediately needed.
Treatment is always accompanied with psychological therapy which will focus on decreasing alcohol consumption and adhering to the treatment. When administered, this medication acts in the brain and affects the pleasure sensations that are normally produced as a result of drinking alcohol. This can help reduce cravings for alcoholic drinks and improve the chances of successfully reducing alcohol consumption as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Dosage and Administration
Following an assessment of the patient's alcohol dependence and the amount of alcoholic drinks consumed, the doctor will ask the patient to make a record of their alcohol consumption for roughly 2 weeks before treatment with Selincro (Nalmefene) can commence. Following this, treatment may start. Doctors normally direct patients to take it as required. If the patient feels like drinking, 1 tablet should be administered, 1 to 2 hours prior to the time at which they feel they will drink (if possible). Should the patient have started drinking alcohol already, the tablet should be taken immediately. However, the maximum dose is one tablet each day.
Side effects
Use of Selincro (Nalmefene) may lead to some side effects, which can include:
It is essential that all side effects are reported to your doctor. If you suffer from muscular spasms, hallucinations, severe drowsiness or any other serious side effects that have not been listed here, consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions
The aim of treatment with this medicine is to reduce your consumption of alcohol as part of a guided step by step treatment plan instead of immediate abstinence. If immediate cessation is needed, other forms of treatment may be recommended instead.
This medicine is not suitable for patients who are taking opioids or certain other medications. It should also not be used if you suffer from kidney or liver function problems.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Selincro (Nalmefene) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
