Uses
Sorbitrate 10 (Isosorbide Dinitrate) is a vasodilator used in the treatment of angina. This medicine is commonly referred to as a nitrate and it works by causing the peripheral arteries and blood vessels to relax and become wider. It achieves this by causing the vascular smooth muscle to become relaxed. The subsequent widening of the veins means that there is a significant increase in the amount of space inside the blood vessels, resulting in decreased vascular resistance and pressure within the arteries.
Because of this, the blood is pumped around the heart much more effectively. Angina pain generally occurs as a result of not enough oxygen reaching the heart, especially at times when the heart needs to work faster (for example, when performing physical activity). By causing dilation of the arteries within the heart (and therefore increasing its supply of oxygen), this medicine can help to prevent the occurrence of angina attacks.
Dosage and Administration
Sorbitrate 10 (Isosorbide Dinitrate) comes as 10mg tablets. Your doctor will instruct you on proper usage, as well as telling you how much to take and when to take it. Patients are sometimes told to take 1/2 to 1 tablet 4 times per day via oral administration (the exact amount often varies from patient to patient and will be decided upon by your doctor after taking your individual circumstances into account). Some patients may be told by their doctor to take 1/2 to 1 tablet sublingually (meaning that it is allowed to dissolve under the tongue). However, this means of administration is only suitable if your doctor has specifically told you to.
