Uses
Spiriva (Tiotropium Bromide) contains an active ingredient which is a type of anticholinergic. It is prescribed to treat breathing diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. Patients affected by these conditions usually have difficulty breathing due to the fact that their air passages are narrowed. This drug relaxes the muscles in the air passages, thereby opening them up. Doing so helps to make breathing easier for patients suffering from breathing conditions. However, it is not used to treat a sudden attack of breathlessness.
Dosage and Administration
Spiriva (Tiotropium Bromide) is administered using a special inhalation device, called a Handihaler (included). Do not swallow the capsules as they are only meant for use with the inhalation device. Follow the instructions of your doctor with regard to dosage. Adults are sometimes told to use it once per day. It may be necessary to inhale twice with each capsule, to insure that all of the medication has been inhaled. Doctors normally advise cleaning the inhaler once per month with water. You must ensure that it has dried fully before you use it again.
