Uses
Flixotide (Fluticasone Propionate) acts as an anti-inflammatory agent on the lungs, which in turn helps to alleviate the symptoms of asthma. It may also help decrease exacerbations of asthma. In general, doctors recommend its use for the prophylactic management of asthma in patients whose symptoms range from mild to severe, and in those who have previously undergone treatment with a bronchodilator or other forms of preventative treatment.
The active ingredient in this medicine is a trifluorinated corticosteroid which works by acting on the glucocorticoid receptor. Tightening of the airways due to inflammation is known to contribute to asthma. By affecting a wide variety of cells which are known to contribute to inflammation, as well as other mediators (histamine and leukotrienes), this medicine can help to prevent inflammation in the airways and lungs, and therefore can be used to reduce the occurrence of asthma attacks.
Dosage and Administration
Flixotide (Fluticasone Propionate) is administered by means of oral inhalation. Your doctor will advise you on how to properly use the inhaler, and you may also refer to the instructions provided on the packaging. If you are unsure about anything, make sure that you ask the doctor. Generally, patients with asthma will have their treatment and condition constantly reviewed by their doctor. It is important to note that the daily dosage can vary, depending on the severity of symptoms and other individual factors.
This inhaler delivers 125mcg with every dose, and there is sufficient medication contained to allow the administration of 120 metered doses. Doctors may tell adult patients treating mild asthma to administer 100mcg to 250mcg twice per day as a starting dose. Moderate or severe symptoms may require a higher starting dose. Following this, adjustments may be made to the daily dose based on how well the patient responds to treatment.
