Uses
TMP (Trimethoprim) is an antibiotic, which is primarily used to treat urinary tract infections. Other uses include treating ear infections, preventing kidney infections, treating patients for certain types of lung infections (pneumocystitis carinii pneumonia) and various other uses. This drug works by inhibiting the bacteria's production of folic acid (folate). A lack of folic acid prevents the bacteria from producing DNA, thereby stopping them from spreading, allowing any bacteria that remain to be destroyed by the immune system.
Dosage and Administration
TMP (Trimethoprim) tablets are taken by mouth. However, prior to commencing treatment, a medical assessment is required, so that your doctor can determine the proper dose. Adults treating cystitis are often told to take 100mg at 12 hour intervals (or else 200mg every 24 hours), with treatment lasting for a period of 10 days. Other conditions will require different doses, and in all cases, the dosage regimen prescribed by your doctor must be strictly followed.
