Uses
Tofranil (Imipramine) is used for alleviating depression, and experts believe that it works by inhibiting the uptake of noradrenaline, which helps to boost the mood and relieve depression. The active ingredient is a tricyclic antidepressant which is said to be derived from dibenzazepines (a type of chemical compound). By affecting serotonin and noradrenaline uptake (both of which are neurotransmitters), it can help to increase adrenergic synapses.
This in turn can lengthen the effects of these neurotransmitters on the mood after they are released. Another indication for this medication is bedwetting (referred to medically as enuresis). Medical experts are not entirely sure of how it achieves its therapeutic effects when used for this condition, however it has been theorized that its antidepressant action could be a contributory factor in controlling this condition.
Other doctors have stated that it may act on the cholinergic receptors, thereby helping to prevent bladder contractions and improve the patient's control over urination. Medical research has taken place, which focused on its effects if used to treat depression in alcoholics, depressive symptoms in patients with OCD and anxiety.
Dosage and Administration
Tofranil (Imipramine) coated tablets each contain 10mg of the active component. Adults treating depression are sometimes told by their doctor to commence treatment with 25mg, taken 1 to 3 times per day. This may be gradually increased by the doctor to a dosage ranging from 150mg to 200mg per day. After this, careful reduction of the dosage may be recommended if control of symptoms occurs, and the usual maintenance dosage is between 50mg and 100mg per day.
Elderly patients may be told to begin with 10mg per day, and the doctor may adjust this dosage, and instruct the patient to take 30mg to 50mg per day. Never exceed the dosage that your doctor prescribed during treatment. In general, full therapeutic effects in the treatment of depression will be noticeable 1 to 3 weeks after the commencement of treatment.
