Uses
Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) is a member of the TCA (tricyclic antidepressant) group of medicines, and is indicated for depression. Its therapeutic benefits are believed to be related to its ability to directly affect the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline. This is achieved by blocking the action of the membrane pump mechanism which causes the neuronal reuptake of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Because the reuptake of neurotransmitters can terminate some of their functions, preventing or affecting their reuptake helps to increase and prolong their positive effects on the mood. This can help to relieve the common symptoms of depression. The sedative effects of this medicine may also help depressed patients whose symptoms are accompanied by feelings of anxiety.

Recently, this medicine has found other uses, such as the treating of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis). In addition to this, some doctors have used it to treat different forms of nerve pain, including postherpetic neuralgia and fibromyalgia, as well as irritable bowel syndrome. It has even been taken for the prevention of migraine.

Dosage and Administration
Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) comes as 25mg strength film coated tablets which are taken by means of oral administration. Careful consideration for your individual circumstances will be needed by your doctor when deciding upon an appropriate dosage regimen. The dosage will also differ depending on the condition being treated.

In some cases, patients taking this medicine for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder may be directed to administer 75mg per day, as a single dose. For maintenance treatment, the doctor may decide to make changes to the dosage schedule based on the response to the initial dose. Depression, neuropathic pain and any other condition may need a different dosage.

Side effects
Patients undergoing treatment with the tricyclic antidepressant Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) might notice some side effects during treatment. These may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • An unusual taste
  • Hearing a ringing sound
  • Inflammation affecting the breasts
  • Sexual function reduction or impotence

Remember that you will need to tell the doctor providing treatment about any side effects that occur. You will require medical care straight away if you suffer from seizures, seeing things that are not there, difficulty balancing, bleeding, body movements which you have no control over or any severe reactions which have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
This medicine is not frequently used as a first line treatment for depression, due to the fact that other medicines are generally better tolerated. It must be noted that withdrawal symptoms are possible if treatment is suddenly withdrawn. Your doctor may gradually lower your dosage to avoid this.

Patients taking antidepressants may suffer from suicidal thoughts. Should you notice this, or if a sudden change in mood or emotion occurs, see your doctor straight away.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
