Uses
Tofranil (Imipramine) is a type of TCA (an abbreviation for tricyclic antidepressant) which belongs to the dibenzazepine class of medicines. Conditions treated include clinical depression (major depressive disorder), especially when anxiety or agitation also occurs. In addition to this, some doctors have used it to treat patients for nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting).
Although medical experts are unsure exactly how it works for treating nighttime urinary incontinence, it may possible inhibit the effects of acetylcholine on the patient's bladder. When used as an antidepressant, it acts on certain chemicals in the brain, which helps to improve the mood of the patient. Some doctors believe that it may have some benefits in the treatment of migraine, ADHD, ongoing pain disorders, anxiety and Kleine Levin syndrome.
Dosage and Administration
Tofranil (Imipramine) comes in the form of tablets, and each tablet contains 25mg of the active component. The exact dosing schedule and the amount of medicine to be taken will be decided upon by the doctor providing treatment. Some patients who are being treated for depression may be told by their doctor to take 25mg (one tablet) 1 to 3 times per day at the start of treatment. Depending on the doctor's opinion, the dosage may be gradually raised to 150mg to 200mg per day (usually this will occur before the first week of treatment ends), however, the dosage must only be adjusted by a doctor. When the symptoms appear to improve, the doctor may lower the dosage, and tell the patient to take 50mg to 100mg per day.
