Uses
Trajenta (Linagliptin) is used alongside dietary management and regular exercise to help improve the body's control over sugar levels in patients affected by type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient in these tablets belongs to the DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4) inhibitor class of medicines, and it works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme known as DPP-4 that causes degradation of the incretin hormones (such as GLP-1) responsible for increasing the amount of insulin released. This in turn increases the levels of incretin hormones and helps trigger the release of insulin, which helps reduce the levels of glucose (sugars) circulating in the body.
Dosage and Administration
Trajenta (Linagliptin) is provided as 5mg strength tablets which are to be taken orally. You may be instructed by the doctor to take 1 tablet (5mg) per day. Specific instructions regarding diet and regular exercise will also be given to you by your doctor. This is to ensure that glycaemic control is properly improved, and it is therefore very important that you listen carefully to all directions provided by the doctor in charge of treatment. Do not take more of this medicine than your doctor tells you to take and if you are unsure of any details relating to treatment with this medicine, check with your doctor.
Side effects
Patients who take Trajenta (Linagliptin) for the control of diabetes 2 (or for any other purposes) should be aware that side effects may occur:
You must report all side effects to the doctor in charge of treatment. The above list is not complete and other reactions are also possible, some of which are serious. Get immediate medical attention if you suffer from poor appetite, skin which starts to peel, flaky skin, pruritis, pancreatitis symptoms or any other serious side effects that have not been listed here.
Precautions
Patients with diabetes may be at risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), which could result in shakiness, headaches, vertigo and other symptoms. Your doctor may advise you to keep food or drinks containing sugar with you at all times.
Although this medicine can help diabetic patients to better control the levels of blood sugar, it will not cure the condition.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Trajenta (Linagliptin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
