Uses
Trazonil (Trazodone HCL) is used as an antidepressant in patients affected by major depressive disorder. Other conditions treated include bipolar depression, unipolar depression and anxiety disorder. This medicine is known as a serotonin antagonist reuptake inhibitor (SARI) and it acts on the neurotransmitters in the brain to treat depressive illnesses. It also has hypnotic benefits, and for this reason, some doctors believe that it may be useful as an insomnia treatment, to help with sleep.
A considerable amount of research has been conducted to determine whether or not there are any other uses for this drug. These studies focused on treating fibromyalgia, schizophrenia, alcohol withdrawal, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), bulimia, diabetic neuropathy, panic attacks and the medicine's effects on erectile function.
Dosage and Administration
Trazonil (Trazodone HCL) comes as 50mg tablets. Patients who have been told to take the immediate release tablets are sometimes directed (by a doctor) to start out with 150mg per day, which is administered in divided doses. Maintenance treatment may require increasing the dosage at 3 to 4 day intervals if the doctor deems necessary. However, the maximum dose that doctors prescribe is usually 400mg per day. The medicine is usually taken after the consumption of a meal or snack. Never increase your dosage unless your doctor has instructed you to do so.
Side effects
Patients taking Trazonil (Trazodone HCL) for depression or any other conditions may sometimes be affected by side effects, such as:
Report any side effects to the doctor that is providing treatment. Patients should go to the hospital immediately if they notice hallucinations, reflex problems, speech difficulties, stiff muscles, seizures or any other serious side effects.
Precautions
In rare cases, this drug may cause a priapism (an erection which lasts for a period in excess of four hours). If this occurs, you must immediately seek medical attention so that treatment can be obtained as soon as possible.
Antidepressants can sometimes cause depression or anxiety to become worse, and certain patients may even be at risk of suicidal thoughts. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice a worsening of your symptoms.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Trazonil (Trazodone HCL) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
