Uses
Valcivir (Valacyclovir) is an antiviral medicine effective at treating herpes, shingles and cold sores. This medication will not cure the herpes virus, but will provide relief from pain and itching, and can also help with the healing process. It may even prevent the formation of new sores. The active ingredient in this medicine works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called DNA polymerase. This particular enzyme is needed for the virus to multiply. Blocking the enzyme allows the immune system to control herpes symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Valcivir (Valacyclovir) tablets are taken orally, however the precise dosage can vary considerably depending on the condition being treated. Patients treating genital herpes may be told to take it 1 to 2 times per day for a period of 7 to 10 days. Your doctor will tell you to take it at the first sign of a genital herpes episode. Cold sores may require a dose of 2g taken orally every 12 hours, with a total of 2 doses taken. Conditions not listed here can require different doses. In all cases, a medical consultation is required before the commencement of treatment, so that the proper dosage can be prescribed.
Side effects
Patients should take note of the side effects which Valcivir (Valacyclovir) can cause. Some possible reactions are listed here:
If you notice signs of a serious side effect which may cause harm to red blood cells, such as bloody diarrhoea, fever or red spots on the skin, you must consult your doctor straight away. Other serious reactions which require immediate medical attention may also occur.
Precautions
Patients with liver disease, kidney problems, disorders affecting the immune system, HIV or AIDS must inform their doctor of their condition and medical history before starting treatment with this drug.
Because cold sores may be spread easily, patients are advised to avoid close physical contact until the sores have completely healed. Also, this drug will not prevent herpes from being spread to other people. Patients are advised to avoid sexual activity during a herpes outbreak.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Valcivir (Valacyclovir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
