Uses
Valcivir (Valacyclovir) is a type of antiviral medicine prescribed to treat symptoms of herpes viruses. It is used as a treatment for cold sores (occurring as a result of herpes simplex), chickenpox and shingles (herpes zoster). Doctors also frequently prescribe it to treat genital herpes outbreaks, or to reduce the occurrence of future episodes. Another use for this medicine is the prevention of CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection in patients who have undergone an organ transplant.
Dosage and Administration
Valcivir (Valacyclovir) tablets each contain 1000mg of the active ingredient. The required dosage will be decided by your doctor. Adults undergoing treatment for herpes simplex labialis are usually directed to start taking the medicine when the first signs of a cold sore are noticed. Dosage sometimes consists of 2g, taken every 12 hours (a total of 4g). The dosage for genital herpes can vary, however, patients treating a first episode are sometimes instructed by their doctor to take 1g twice per day for a period lasting 7 to 10 days. Recurrent episodes may require 500mg (twice per day) for a period of 3 days.
