Uses
Vermox (Mebendazole) is an antihelmintic (anti-worm) medication, which is most commonly used to treat threadworm (also called pinworm) infections. However, it is also considered effective against other intestinal parasitic worms, such as roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. This medicine helps the body to rid itself of the parasite by preventing the worms from absorbing the sugars they need to survive. Because of this, the worms starve, and eventually die, after which they are passed out in the patient's stools.
Dosage and Administration
Ask your doctor about the proper dosage procedure before you use Vermox (Mebendazole) tablets. In most cases, to treat threadworm infections, patients are told to take a single dose. This should be sufficient to treat the infection. However, if the infection returns, a second dose should be taken 2 weeks after the first. Because threadworm infections are spread so easily, your doctor may recommend treating the whole family simultaneously. Roundworm, whipworm and hookworm infections may require one tablet taken twice per day for a period of 3 days.
Side effects
Vermox (Mebendazole) tablets are mild, and most patients experiencing side effects only report mild reactions. Some examples are listed here:
Serious reactions are rare. Nevertheless, if you notice seizures, pink or dark urine, severe stomach pain, fever, signs of infection or any other symptoms of serious side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions
If you suffer from anaemia, liver disease or any medical conditions affecting the intestines, you should tell your doctor about your medical history before taking this medication.
It is advisable to clean and disinfect toilets on a daily basis, and to regularly change and wash bed linen, towels and pyjamas. This is to prevent re-infection.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Vermox (Mebendazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
