Gout prevention treatment | Allopurinol | Zyloric |
Uses
Zyloric (Allopurinol) is used to ameliorate the symptoms of gout and it works by blocking the body's biochemical reactions involved in uric acid production. Gout attacks cause pain and swelling in the joints, especially the metarsal-phalangeal joint of the toe. These symptoms are caused by high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) causing crystals to form at the joint. This drug is known medically as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, and it effectively blocks the enzyme known as xanthine oxidase from forming uric acid, which can help to manage gout and prevent acute attacks. It has also been used for kidney stones, and studies have taken place based on its effects if used for dermatological conditions such as psoriasis.
Dosage and Administration
Zyloric (Allopurinol) comes as a 100mg strength variety of tablets, and administration is via the oral route. Adult patients treating gout which is moderate to severe in nature may be instructed to begin with 100mg (one tablet). The dosage will be titrated by the doctor for maintenance treatment depending on the severity of symptoms. Mild gout is sometimes maintained with 200mg to 300mg per day, and more serious symptoms may require a higher maintenance dosage. Calcium oxalate calculi may be treated with a different dosage. In all cases, stick to the dosage regimen that your doctor prescribes for you.
Side effects
In addition to the therapeutic effects, Zyloric (Allopurinol) can also produce side effects, such as:
All patients should note that it is necessary to promptly inform your doctor of any side effects which occur. Immediate medical assistance will be necessary if you experience bloody urine, a painful sensation when passing urine, rectal or other unusual bleeding, bleeding from the nose, bruises or any other serious side effects.
Precautions
Doctors usually instruct patients not to commence treatment while suffering from an acute gout attack, as there is a possibility of it aggravating the symptoms. Treatment generally begins when the attack is over. Your doctor will tell you when to start.
