Uses
Zurig 40 (Febuxostat) functions as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor and is used to manage chronic hyperuricaemia in those suffering from gout. It works by decreasing uric acid production. However, it is not normally used for asymptomatic hyperuricaemia. Uric acid occurs as a result of the metabolic process and is usually removed in the urine. Should the blood levels of uric acid become too high, crystals could be formed in the joints.
The likelihood of this may be increased due to dietary habits or medical treatment. Gout attacks can cause pain and inflammation affecting the toe, foot or possibly the knees. The body produces uric acid by means of a certain enzyme (xanthine oxidase). As this medicine inhibits xanthine oxidase, it therefore reduces serum uric acid. Resulting from this, the occurrence of gout flare-ups can be reduced.
Uses
Zurig 40 (Febuxostat) comes in the form of tablets containing 40mg of the active ingredient. Patients will be instructed on the correct dosage to administer by their doctor. Usually, adult patients treating hyperuricaemia and gout are told to take 40mg to 80mg per day, however it is common for doctors to instruct patients to take 40mg once per day at the beginning of treatment.
Medical tests may need to be conducted 2 weeks after beginning treatment, and if a satisfactory reduction in uric acid levels is not achieved, the patient may be told to take 80mg per day. Gout attacks may continue for some time after treatment has commenced as the body will not be able to remove the uric acid instantly. This medicine will not relieve pain nor will it treat an ongoing gout attack. It is for the long term management only.
