Uses
Adalat (Nifedipine) belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers. It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions in the smooth and cardiac muscle. As calcium causes the contraction (tightening) of muscular cells inside the blood vessels, without it the arterial walls become wider. This makes it easier for the body to pump blood and also reduces blood pressure. Because of this, it is often used as an antihypertensive agent to treat high blood pressure. It is used in the treatment of chronic stable angina, due to it preventing coronary artery spasms and reducing the heart's need for oxygen. This helps to stop angina attacks from occurring. Doctors have also treated Raynaud's syndrome with this medicine.
Dosage and Administration
Adalat (Nifedipine) comes in the form of 10mg, which makes it easy for your doctor to calculate and adjust the correct dosage. Certain patients may need to start treatment on a relatively low dosage, due to particularly light body weight or else because of undergoing other forms of treatment. Determining the proper dosage (as well as the decision whether or not to make adjustments) will be done by your doctor. In some cases, patients treating chronic stable angina have been told to take 1 tablet (containing 10mg of the active ingredient) twice per day. However, it is possible that this could differ and it is necessary to comply with the instructions of your doctor.
Side effects
Patients treated with Adalat (Nifedipine) might experience side effects, such as:
You will need to tell the doctor about all side effects which occur. Although the less serious side effects are more common, patients should still take note of the risk of serious reactions. Go to the hospital immediately if you experience inflammation affecting the feet, angina symptoms which become worse, feeling as if you may lose consciousness or any other reactions that have not been listed here.
Precautions
You may be directed by your doctor to cease treatment on a temporary basis if you are scheduled to have any surgical procedures.
This medication is not effective as a treatment for an ongoing angina attack as it is not a fast acting medication.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Adalat (Nifedipine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
