Uses
Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) is used to treat melasma and skin hyperpigmentation, and is also effective as an acne treatment. It works by lightening the colour of the skin. Patients have also used it to treat other forms of hyperpigmentory disorders, including Lentigo maligna (a growth of malignant cells common on sun-damaged skin), post inflammatory melanoderma and other related conditions. Medical experts believe that it works by acting on the hyperactive melanocytes.
Melanocytes are types of skin cells which are responsible for producing the skin pigment melanin, and by affecting these cells, the cream can help to lighten the colour of hyperpigmented skin. This is achieved by functioning as a tyrosinase inhibitor. When used for acne, its mechanism of action may be due to it triggering a reduction in filaggrin synthesis (a type of protein), which may in turn reduce the formation of spots. It can also help to eliminate propionebacterium acnes, the type of bacteria associated with acne. Some people have even been treated with it for rosacea, because of its anti-inflammatory effects.
Dosage and Administration
Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) is indicated for topical use. Follow the application instructions given by your doctor. Adult patients are usually told to apply it to the areas of skin in need of treatment twice each day (in the morning and evening). Rub it in gently to ensure that it properly penetrates the skin. Before use, you should clean the skin with water or a mild skin cleanser. The exact duration of treatment needed may differ based on the severity of the acne or hyperpigmentation (whichever one is being treated), and your doctor will decide on how long you need to continue using it for.
