Uses
Champix (Varenicline) is a type of medicine which is used to help people quit smoking. The active ingredient in this drug belongs to a group of medicines referred to as nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonists. Patients are given this drug to help reduce the craving for cigarettes, and to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms. When taken, this drug stimulates the same receptors in the brain which nicotine acts on, producing effects similar to that of nicotine. It also inhibits the enjoyable and pleasant effects any nicotine inhaled may have on the brain.
Dosage and Administration
Champix (Varenicline) comes as tablets, which are taken orally alongside a full glass of water. These tablets will require some time to start working. Because of this, patients are usually told to decide upon a date on which to stop smoking. Treatment should commence 1 to 2 weeks before this date. In some cases, patients are told to start off with 0.5mg once per day for days 1 to 3 of treatment, and on days 4 to 7, 0.5mg is taken twice per day. After this (day 8 onwards), 1mg is taken twice per day. Patients who have succeeded in giving up smoking after 12 weeks of treatment may be recommended to undergo another 12 weeks of treatment.
