Relieving nicotine cravings in smokers who wish to quit | Varenicline | Champix |
Uses
Champix (Varenicline) is used in combination with counselling and behaviour modification to help people give up smoking, which is important, as it can help to lessen the risk of cancer, lung disease and other serious conditions. The active ingredient in this medicine works by preventing the action of nicotine on the brain, so that even if the patient smokes during treatment, the nicotine will not have a rewarding effect on them. It also helps to relieve cravings for nicotine by acting on the nicotinic receptors in the patient's brain.
Dosage and Administration
Champix (Varenicline) tablets contain 1mg of the active ingredient. This particular product is usually prescribed to patients who have already commenced treatment with the starter pack (which contains both 0.5mg and 1mg tablets) and are continuing their treatment. Patients who have already commenced treatment with the 0.5mg tablets are prescribed the 1mg tablets. After 7 days of treatment with the 0.5mg tablets, patients are usually told by their doctor to take 1mg by mouth, twice per day. Treatment generally lasts for 12 weeks, and those who succeed may be told to undergo another 12 weeks of treatment.
