Uses
Crestor (Rosuvastatin) is used to reduce high cholesterol levels in patients who are suffering from mixed hyperlipidaemia or primary/familial hypercholesterolaemia. Doctors generally prescribe it when dieting and exercise have not succeeded in controlling cholesterol levels. In addition to this, patients who suffer from coronary heart disease, diabetes (or other conditions which place them at risk) may be given this medicine to lessen the risk of strokes, heart attacks or other complications.
This medicine belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It reduces the levels of LDL (low density lipoprotein), a type of cholesterol which can cause atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries), as well as other bad fats, such as apolipoprotein B and triglycerides. At the same time, it increases the levels of HDL (high density lipoprotein), a type of good cholesterol which can help prevent clogging of the arteries.
Dosage and Administration
A medical consultation and assessment will be required before starting treatment with Crestor (Rosuvastatin) tablets. Adults treating Hyperlipoproteinemia, as well as Hyperlipoproteinemia type IIa, type IIb and type IV may be prescribed an initial dose of either 5mg or 10mg, taken once per day. The prescribing doctor may adjust the dosage and direct the patient to take a maintenance dose which can range from 5mg to 40mg per day. Patients taking this medicine as a treatment for atherosclerosis may also be told to start out with 5mg to 10mg once per day, which may be adjusted, and a maintenance dose of 5mg to 40mg taken once per day.
