Uses
Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) is used to lower cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolaemia, hyperlipidaemia or other risk factors, when adjustments to the diet and increases in exercise have failed to satisfactorily reduce cholesterol levels. In addition to this, patients considered to be at risk of heart disease (such as overweight patients, people with diabetes or hypertension) may be prescribed this medicine to reduce the risk of serious health conditions.

This medicine is a type of drug known as a statin, and it is generally prescribed alongside an exercise plan and a healthy diet. Overweight patients may be advised to lose weight. This medication helps to lower levels of bad cholesterol (LDL, low density lipoprotein), while also helping to increase the levels of good cholesterol (HDL, or high density lipoprotein). When used together with an exercise plan and healthy diet, it can reduce the risk of serious health conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Patients will need a medical consultation before taking Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) tablets to treat their condition. After a thorough medical assessment, the appropriate dosage can be prescribed. The initial dosage for patients taking this medication to prevent cardiovascular disease usually ranges from 10mg to 80mg per day. An adjustment to the patient's dosage may be made at 2 to 4 week intervals. Other conditions may require different doses, and it is essential to follow the instructions given by your doctor.

Side effects
Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) may cause:

• Memory loss
• Skin irritation
• Digestive disturbances
• Mild pain affecting the muscles

You should inform your doctor if you do not feel well during treatment. Severe side effects which need urgent medical care may occur, however, this is considered to be less common. If you notice appetite loss, dark discolouration of your urine, weight gain, bruising, fever or any other signs of serious side effects which have not been listed here, tell your doctor immediately.

Precautions
During treatment, your doctor may advise you to limit or cease consumption of alcoholic beverages, as drinking alcohol while taking this drug may increase the risk of liver problems.

This drug should never be taken during pregnancy, as it may harm an unborn baby. Patients must also use reliable contraception to ensure that a pregnancy does not occur during treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
