Description

Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease and angioedema Danazol Danogen-200

Uses
Danogen-200 (Danazol) is a derivative of ethisterone. Its mode of action involves blocking the pituitary gland from producing gonadtrophins, which contributes to a reduction in sex hormone levels in the body (such as oestrogen and progestogen). This medicine is used to treat endometriosis that is responsive to hormonal treatment, however, it is usually only considered for this condition when a satisfactory response has not been achieved from other medicines or treatments, as its side effects are considered more serious than those associated with GnRH-a medicines.

Patients who suffer from breast pain and tenderness caused by benign breast fibrocystic disease may be treated with this medicine instead of analgesics or other treatment options if the symptoms are serious. However, symptoms may recur after treatment has finished. In some cases, this drug may be used in men or women, to prevent the occurrence of angioedema attacks. Other potential uses for this medicine have been studied, such as treating severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder, gynaecomastia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITC) and conditions which have not been listed here.

Dosage and Administration
Danogen-200 (Danazol) comes as 200mg capsules. The required dosage will be decided by a doctor, and will differ based on factors such as the patient's medical history and the condition being treated. Adults taking this medicine for angioedema may be told to take a dosage consisting of 200mg, 3 times per day. The doctor may then tell the patient to reduce the dosage to the minimum effective dosage. Endometriosis and benign breast fibrocystic disease may need a different dosage. Also, female patients may be told to start treatment during menstruation (usually on the first day) so as to prevent the possibility of pregnancy. Effective non-hormonal contraception is also required while taking this medicine, and patients should also note that it must never be taken during pregnancy.

Side effects
Patients undergoing treatment with Danogen-200 (Danazol) may experience:

  • Acne
  • Flushing
  • Changes in voice
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Growth of hair in strange places

Inform the doctor providing medical care of any side effects. There is a possibility of patients experiencing serious reactions. You must visit your doctor or go to the hospital straight away if you notice a headache which persists, a ringing noise, negative effects on vision or any other severe side effects.

Precautions
Prior to beginning treatment, inform your doctor if you are suffering from or have a history of migraines, diseases affecting the blood vessels, breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes or any other medical conditions.

In rare cases, this medicine has been associated with serious blood clots. Ask your doctor about the risk of this before starting treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Danogen-200 (Danazol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
