Uses
Vagifem (Estradiol) (also spelled oestradiol) is a natural female sex hormone which is used to treat atrophic vaginitis caused by the menopause. During the menopause, a decreased amount of oestrogen is produced. This can result in vaginal dryness, itchiness, and may even lead to infections. Menopausal women are prescribed this medicine as part of HRT (hormone replacement therapy), and it helps to relieve vaginal menopausal symptoms by replenishing the oestrogen levels.
Dosage and Administration
Vagifem (Estradiol) tablets are inserted into the vagina, so as to provide topical relief from dryness and other uncomfortable vaginal symptoms. Women with a uterus may need to take a progestin, so as to lessen the risk of endometrial cancer. This may not be necessary for women without a uterus. In most cases, the lowest effective dose will be used for the shortest possible period of time.
Women treating vaginal menopause may be told to administer 1 tablet per day, for a period of 2 weeks. After this, the prescribing doctor may direct the patient to administer 1 tablet per week (such as every Tuesday and Friday). During the course of treatment, the patient will need to attend medical checkups, to determine whether or not treatment is still needed.
Side effects
Treating menopausal symptoms with Vagifem (Estradiol) may cause side effects, such as:
Inform your doctor of any side effects which you notice during treatment. It is possible that serious reactions may occur. Immediately seek medical care if you notice bulging of the eyes, swelling of the stomach, pain affecting the joints, severe headaches, changes in vision or any other signs that you are suffering from a severe reaction.
Precautions
Taking oestrogens may sometimes increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Patients without a uterus who are taking this medicine alongside a progestin may be at a reduced risk of endometrial cancer, but may be more likely to develop breast cancer. You should discuss the risks of treatment with your doctor before using this medication.
Regularly examine your breasts every month during the course of treatment. A mammogram may also be scheduled by your doctor. Therefore, it is important to attend all scheduled medical appointments.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Vagifem (Estradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
