Progynova

Uses
The active ingredient of Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) is Estradiol valerate. Estradiol valerate is a female hormone which is often used to treat symptoms associated with menopause.

Progynova contains only esterogen (oestrogen), therefore it should not be used alone by a woman who has never had a hysterectomy, Progynova should be used with progesterone in this case.

Side effects
Patients should be aware that Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) may cause excessive or unwanted hair growth, breast pain, libido changes, cramps, skin flushing, headache, dizziness, hair loss, nausea, upset stomach, yeast infection or weight loss/gain.

Contact a doctor if you experience following side effects

Anaphylactic Shock (skin rashes, hives, itchiness, breathing difficulties, chest tightness, face, lips or tongue swelling), dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, lumps in breast, Pain or tenderness of the calf muscle, chest pain, vision or speech changes, emotional problems (confusion, depression, loss of memory),coughing blood, an arm or a leg numbness/weakness or weakness on one side of the body, severe stomach ache or swelling, vomiting, contact lens discomfort, sudden onset of shortness of breath, hands/feet swelling, abnormal discharge from vagina, fainting, yellow skin/eye.

Precautions
Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) may increase the risk of uterus/ovary/breast cancer in females who have reached menopause, particularly in female who is taking only estrogen (not with progesterone)

Although they rarely occur, Estrogen + progesterone therapy may cause heart disease, deep vein thrombosis, dementia and breast cancer.

Do not use Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) if you are an expectant mother or if you are planning to become pregnant or breast feeding a baby.

Do not use Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) if you have had an estrogen induced cancer, blood clotting, abnormal vaginal bleeding, heart disease, active liver illness or history of liver illness which has made your liver doesn`t function as used to be.

Use Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) with caution if you have had fibroid, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, liver dysfunction gall stones, high blood pressure, blood disorders, migraines, epilepsy, asthma, severe obesity or if you or your family has had recurrent miscarriage.

Interaction with other medication
Following medication may interact with Progynova (Estradiol Valerate):

Antiepileptic drugs, barbiturates, protease inhibitors, rifamycin antibiotics, St John`s wort, ropinirole, warfarin, corticosteroids, tacrine or succinylcholine.
