Uses
Progynova (Oestradiol Valerate) is widely prescribed for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in female patients, to supplement declining levels of oestrogen in menopausal women. It is normally only used for short term treatment. Reduced oestrogen production can cause perspiration, disturbed sleep, mood changes, hot flushes, dryness or burning of the vagina and other symptoms. Taking these tablets can treat and relieve these symptoms. In some cases, doctors may prescribe these tablets to prevent thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) in postmenopausal women.
Dosage and Administration
Progynova (Oestradiol Valerate) comes as tablets. Your doctor will tell you how much to take at the time of prescription. Most women are told to take one tablet each day. The tablet should be taken at the same time each day. You are advised not to leave a break in between blister foils (unless your doctor has told you to do so). The tablets are generally taken continuously, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Your doctor will tell you how long to use this medicine for, and in most cases, treatment is only short term, as there are certain health risks associated with long term treatment.
Side effects
Some side effects which you may notice while taking Progynova (Oestradiol Valerate) tablets include:
Report any side effects you experience to your doctor. If you notice appetite loss, blisters, problems related to speech or balance, peripheral oedema, a lump on the breast or any other signs of a serious side effect, you must consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions
Under no circumstances should oestrogens (such as this medicine) be used to prevent the occurrence of dementia or diseases affecting the heart.
Treatment with oestrogens may increase the risk of certain types of cancer. Some patients may be told by their doctor to take a progestin alongside this medicine, to lessen the risk of endometrial cancer.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Progynova (Oestradiol Valerate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
