Uses
Dilantin (Phenytoin Sodium) is an anti-seizure medicine (also called an anticonvulsant) which is used as a treatment for epileptic seizures, including tonic-clonic seizures (often referred to as grand mal epilepsy) and complex partial seizures (including temporal lobe or psychomotor seizures). It is also indicated for the prevention and treatment of seizures which may occur either during or after surgery on the brain has taken place.
Treatment with this medicine aims to prevent the occurrence of epileptic seizures by preventing overstimulation of the brain function. It achieves this by stopping sodium from building up in the brain's nerve cells, resulting in stable electrical activity in the brain. In some cases, this drug has been used for trigeminal neuralgia, a condition which causes nerve pain to occur on the face.

It is possible that your doctor will tell you to start treatment with a low dosage, and your dosage may then be gradually increased.
