Uses
Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is an anti-epileptic medicine which treats epilepsy by decreasing polysynaptic responses and normalising electrical activity in the brain. Types of epileptic seizures which it is used for include grand mal (tonic-clonic) seizures, partial seizures (such as temporal lobe or psychomotor seizures) and mixed seizures. By helping to stabilise the sodium channels in the nerve cells, which prevents overstimulation of the brain and abnormal electrical signals, it can help prevent the occurrence of seizures.
Another indication for this drug is helping to maintain mood stability and prevent the occurrence of mania in patients affected by bipolar disorder. Medical trials showed that it can reduce manic symptoms and may even have antidepressive benefits. This could be related to its action on the GABA receptors. Some patients have also been treated with it for schizophrenia.
Pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy can be relieved by this medicine. Although its mode of action in treating pain is unknown, it is said to significantly reduce reflexes and nerve pain. Studies have been conducted based on its effects if used for ADHD, borderline personality disorder, neuromyotonia, post traumatic stress disorder, complex regional pain syndrome and other disorders not listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is provided in tablet form. The medicine content of each one is 200mg. The dosage can vary depending on the exact condition being treated and the diagnosis of the doctor. If epilepsy is being treated with this medicine, the doctor will most likely instruct the patient to commence treatment with a starting dosage which may range from 100mg to 200mg.
Titration of the dosage may occur at the discretion of the doctor, and the patient may have their dosage adjusted up to 1000mg per day. For maintenance treatment, the daily dosage commonly ranges from 800mg to 1200mg per day. The adult dosage for trigeminal neuralgia, bipolar disorder, diabetic neuropathy or any other medical disorder may also vary. In all cases, the doctor's instructions must be strictly followed.
