Uses
Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) is used to prevent seizures (fits) in patients with epilepsy. It is referred to by doctors as an anticonvulsant, and is either used on its own or else together with other drugs to treat epilepsy (absence seizures and generalised tonic-clonic seizures) and a type of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Another use for this drug is treating bipolar disorder.
It is sometimes used to help prevent the occurrence of depressive episodes in patients affected by this condition. Medical researchers also believe that it may have other possible benefits or off label uses, such as treating migraines, peripheral neuropathy, post traumatic stress disorder, schizoaffective disorder, depersonalization disorder, borderline personality disorder and other conditions which have not been listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) comes as 25mg tablets. The right dosage will be decided by your doctor, taking into account the condition being treated, the severity of the symptoms and also if any other medicine is being taken. Patients treating epilepsy who are also taking other medicines will need a different dosage regimen to those who are only using this drug to treat their symptoms. Also, adjustments to the dosage may be required from time to time, and patients must carefully follow the instructions given by their doctor.
Side effects
Side effects of Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) can include:
While you are taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor about any side effects which occur. Some patients may experience serious side effects. You must see a doctor straight away if you notice light sensitivity, stiffness that affects the neck, pale skin, bruising, weight gain or any other signs of a serious reaction.
Precautions
When treatment with this drug is being stopped, it is likely that your doctor will tell you to gradually reduce your dosage, instead of stopping suddenly. Patients who stop treatment for more than 5 days may need to start out on a low dosage again, so as to lower the risk of a serious skin reaction.
If you experience severe mood changes or suicidal thoughts, you must immediately see your doctor.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
