Seizures, fibromyalgia and pain caused by shingles (herpes zoster) | Pregabalin | Lyrica |
Uses
Lyrica (Pregabalin) is used as an anticonvulsant, to treat seizures. In addition to this, it has been shown effective in relieving pain and is used to treat fibromyalgia pain or pain caused by an injury to the spinal cord. Patients suffering from post herpetic neuralgia (damage to the nerves caused by shingles which results in pain) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy use it for pain relief. Doctors may even prescribe it to treat anxiety.
When used for pain (such as that caused by fibromyalgia or nerve damage), it works by acting on the brain and causing a decrease in the amount of pain signals sent out by the various damaged nerves in the patient`s body. Treatment of epileptic seizures occurs due to the medicine helping to slow down abnormal impulses that can occur in the brain and lead to seizures.
Dosage and Administration
Lyrica (Pregabalin) comes as 75mg tablets. Dosage is as instructed by the doctor prescribing the drug. Patients must strictly follow all directions given by their doctor. In some cases, adults have been told that the fibromyalgia dose is usually 75mg, taken twice per day, for a total of 150mg per day. The dosage may be adjusted within the first week (to 150mg twice per day) if deemed appropriate by a doctor. Patients who have failed to notice satisfactory results have sometimes been directed to take 225mg, twice per day (a total of 450mg per day).
However, each patient`s individual circumstances are different, and only a doctor can determine the proper dosage. It is also important to note that treatment of epilepsy, postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy and other conditions usually require a different dosage regimen.
