Uses
Dilantin (Phenytoin Sodium) is an anticonvulsant drug which works by affecting impulses that can occur in the brain and lead to seizures. Conditions for which it is used to treat include partial seizures, generalised tonic-clonic seizures or seizures which may be experienced as a result of surgery or injury. It is not used for myoclonic or absence seizures. This medicine's anti-epilepsy properties are due to it inhibiting the repetitive firing of electrical signals in the brain, which are caused by sodium and can result in seizures, thereby allowing for a reduction in the impulses that can trigger seizures.
Some patients have taken it for pain related to cancer, neuropathic pain (which is related to the nervous system) or multiple sclerosis. When used for this purpose, it affects the sending of pain signals by acting on the nerve cells in the brain, so as to reduce pain sensations. This drug also has antiarhythmic properties and has been used in the treatment of irregular heartbeats.

In most cases, the dosage required will vary for each individual based on the patient's individual factors.
