Hormone replacement therapy Oestradiol Estrofem

Uses
Estrofem (Oestradiol) is used for HRT (hormone replacement therapy) in women who are showing signs of an oestrogen deficiency and have undergone a hysterectomy (the surgical removal of the womb). It has also been used for the relief of menopausal symptoms (such as hot flushes) that can occur due to a drop in oestrogen levels, and some post-menopausal women considered to be at risk of a bone fracture have taken it for the prevention of osteoporosis.

These tablets contain estradiol (sometimes spelled as oestradiol), which is a female sex hormone and a natural form of oestrogen. Menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, urination problems, low energy levels, flushing and perspiration occur due to the production of sex hormones (such as oestrogen) ceasing as a direct result of the menopause. By replenishing the levels of oestrogen that the body has stopped producing, these tablets provide relief from menopausal symptoms caused by depleted oestrogen levels. Estradiol can also affect the bones, and it may be considered in cases where the patient is at risk of fractures but unable to take other medicines.

Dosage and Administration
Estrofem (Oestradiol) 2mg tablets need to be taken in strict accordance with the instructions given by your doctor. These tablets are provided in a 28 day calendar dial pack. Patients are usually told to take it once per day with a glass of water. The day on which to start treatment can depend, based on each individual`s circumstances. Doctors usually tell patients who are not undergoing any other form of hormone replacement therapy to begin taking the medicine on any day.

However, those who are still having bleeds may need to start on the fifth day. Follow the instructions of your doctor. The lowest possible effective dosage is usually prescribed, and treatment generally only continues for the minimum period of time necessary. Patients who have not had a hysterectomy may be told to take a progesterone type medicine. Your doctor will provide you with the necessary instructions if this applies to you.

Women who are treated with Estrofem (Oestradiol) have reported side effects, such as:
