Uses
Progestogel (Progesteron) is a physiological progestagen gel used to treat pre-menstrual mastodynia (breast pain and tenderness). It works by increasing the concentration of progesterone in the tissue of the breasts. When applied topically, it is absorbed through the skin and acts directly on the breasts. By triggering the blockade of oestrogen receptors, it helps to bring about better absorption of the fluid from the tissues, leading to a reduction in milk duct compression. In addition to this, it can also help trigger the production of certain enzymes which help to oxidize oestradiol into a less active form. This reduces some of the effects that oestrogen has on breast tissues. Application of this gel therefore helps to reduce the intensity and severity of mastalgia and breast pain.
Dosage and Administration
Progestogel (Progesteron) is provided in the form of a gel which is applied topically to the breasts. Each 2.5g of gel contains 0.025g of progesterone. Visit your doctor so that the right application schedule and frequency of administration can be properly determined. It is possible that your doctor may advise applying 2.5g gel onto each breast (for a total of 5g) per day. It should be gently rubbed into the skin. Usually, doctors advise patients to use it from day 10 to day 25 of the cycle. Only use it as your doctor directs you and never apply it excessively.
Side effects
Patients using Progestogel (Progesteron) may be affected by side effects, which could include:
