M-Mometasone Ointment

Uses
M-Mometasone Ointment (Mometasone Furoate) is a topically applied corticosteroid which works by reducing inflammation. It also functions as a vasoconstrictive and antipruritic agent. This ointment is said to be of medium potency, and is used to provide relief from the symptoms of dermatoses which are responsive to corticosteroid treatment. The precise way in which corticosteroids achieve their anti-inflammatory benefits are not fully clear.

Medical experts have theorized that it could be achieved by inducting certain proteins (referred to as phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins or lipocortins). This in turn may have an effect on the production of prostaglandins and other substances that cause inflammatory symptoms. As a result of this, less inflammatory substances are present, which allows for the reduction of the swelling and itching associated with dermatitis and other related skin conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Care must be taken during treatment with M-Mometasone Ointment (Mometasone Furoate) to ensure that all instructions given by your doctor are complied with. Doctors generally instruct adults treating psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis to gently apply a thin layer of the ointment to the part of skin which needs to be treated once per day.

Patients must not bandage the treated area or cover it with any occlusive dressings unless the doctor in charge of treatment strictly tells them to do so. Treatment is generally withdrawn once the symptoms are under control. Should the condition show no signs of improvement after 2 weeks, a doctor should be consulted.

Side effects
Patients should note that M-Mometasone Ointment (Mometasone Furoate) can cause side effects, such as:

• Soft or thin skin
• Swelling of the hair follicles
• Skin discolouration at the treated spot
• Dermatological irritation which is mild in nature

It is essential that all side effects are mentioned to your doctor. There are other side effects caused by this ointment which are so serious that your doctor will need to be contacted immediately. These can include blurry eyesight, weak muscles, oozing from the skin, changes in behaviour, fatigue and other potential serious reactions that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
This ointment is for topical use only. It must not be taken by mouth. Also, patients should never use it on the groin, underneath the arms or on the face unless following the instructions of their doctor.

Application of this ointment to a large portion of skin must be avoided.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use M-Mometasone Ointment (Mometasone Furoate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
