Preventing excessive thyroid hormone production | Methimazole | Methimez |
Uses
Methimez (Methimazole) is prescribed to patients as a treatment for hyperthyroidism (also referred to as an overactive thyroid). It works by preventing the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone, thereby treating symptoms such as anxiety, sleep problems, hair loss and various other symptoms which can be caused by this condition. This medicine may sometimes be given to patients before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy.
Dosage and Administration
The main factor that your doctor will consider when prescribing Methimez (Methimazole) is the severity of the condition being treated. Patients whose hyperthyroidism is considered to be mild may be told to take 5mg every 8 hours. Those affected by moderately severe hyperthyroidism are usually directed to take 10mg every 8 hours (possibly up to 40mg per day), and in some cases patients whose condition is considered severe may be prescribed 20mg taken every 8 hours. The prescribing doctor may adjust the dosage from time to time, and a maintenance dose of 5mg to 15mg per day may be prescribed.
