Uses
Neurontin (Gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant medicine which can treat epilepsy by normalizing the brain's electrical signals. In addition to this, it has analgesic properties and is used in the treatment of neuropathic pain, including post herpetic neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy. Although experts are not entirely sure of how it exhibits anticonvulsant effects, it has been suggested that it may work by triggering a decrease in the release of glutamate (a neurotransmitter which can excite the nerves, leading to epileptic seizures) from the nerve cells. Its pain relieving properties are believed to involve affecting the pain response, which may be due to its effects on the pain signals of the nervous system. Many studies have taken place on this medicine, and these studies focused on its effects if used for restless leg syndrome, insomnia, anxiety and other conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Neurontin (Gabapentin) capsules are administered orally as directed by your doctor. Adults treating post herpetic neuralgia may be told to take 300mg on the first day, 600mg on the second day and 900mg on the third day. Further adjustment of the dosage may be ordered by the doctor. The dosage for epilepsy will also depend on individual factors, however the patient may be instructed to administer 300mg on day 1, 600mg on day 2 and 900mg on day 3 followed by further adjustments. In all cases, you will be required to comply with the dosage instructions given by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.
