Uses
Premarin (Conjugated Estrogen) is used for HRT (hormone replacement therapy) so as to provide relief from symptoms of the menopause. It is also indicated for the prevention of bone problems and an increased risk of bone fractures (osteoporosis) due to the menopause. This medicine contains the female hormone oestrogen, and the mechanism of action is explained here in further detail. Oestrogen production drops due to the menopause, leading to symptoms such as hot flushes, dryness of the vagina and sweating at night. Use of these tablets helps to act as a supplement for the declining oestrogen levels, thereby alleviating post menopausal symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Premarin (Conjugated Estrogen) tablets contain 0.3mg of the main ingredient and must be taken strictly as your doctor directs you. As a general rule, women will be treated with the lowest dose possible to achieve the desired effects, and treatment will continue for the shortest possible duration. If 0.3mg per day is not controlling your symptoms effectively, the doctor may adjust the dosage.
Patients who are not currently being treated with another form of HRT may be told that they can start treatment at any time. However, women who are changing over from another HRT medicine which causes a monthly bleed may or may not be told by their doctor to begin treatment after finishing the course of the other HRT medicine. Instructions regarding dosage will vary depending on individual circumstances, and it is important to carefully listen to all directions provided by your doctor.
