Uses
Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) is a synthetic form of the female hormone known as progesterone. It is commonly used to treat conditions related to abnormal menstrual periods, such as infrequent, painful or otherwise dysfunctional periods. Doctors also prescribe it to treat secondary amenorrhoea (periods which have stopped) and endometriosis. In some cases, it may be used as part of hormone replacement therapy. When used for this purpose, it is often used in combination with oestrogen.
Dosage and Administration
Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) comes in the form of 10mg tablets. Your doctor will tell you how much to take, as the dosage required varies, depending on the condition being treated. Adults treating amenorrhoea are often told to start off with a dose of 5mg to 10mg taken once per day. This may be continued for 5 to 10 days, and withdrawal bleeding should occur within 3 to 7 days after taking the last dose. For treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, the patient may be told to take 5mg to 10mg once per day, commencing on the 16th day of their cycle, and continuing for 10 days. However, in some cases, the patient may be told to begin on the 21st day, and to take the tablets for 5 days. Withdrawal bleeding should be noticed 3 to 7 days after the last dose has been taken.
