Uses
Serevent Accuhaler (Salmeterol) is given to patients as a maintenance (long term) treatment aimed at preventing asthma attacks and breathing difficulties caused by lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It may sometimes be used to prevent bronchospasms caused by exercise. Doctors will generally only prescribe it if treatment with other medications, such as corticosteroids fails to control the symptoms. It is normally used in combination with other medications, such as corticosteroids.
Dosage and Administration
Serevent Accuhaler (Salmeterol) is administered via inhalation, using the inhaler provided. The effects are normally noticed 10 to 20 minutes after administration, and may last for up to 12 hours. A medical consultation is required prior to use, so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. You must only administer the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Adult patients treating asthma may be told to administer 1 puff twice per day. Those affected by severe asthma may be told to inhale 2 puffs twice per day. Treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease usually requires 1 puff twice per day. Children are normally prescribed a different dose than adults.
If you are unsure of how to use the inhaler, ask your doctor for instructions or refer to the leaflet provided with the medication. Improper use of the inhaler could lead to decreased effectiveness. To use it, hold the inhaler in one hand and put the thumb of your other hand on the grip. Push the thumb away from your body until you hear a click. This opens the inhaler. To place the medication in the inhaler, you must turn the mouthpiece towards your body and slide the lever away until a click is heard. Insert the mouthpiece into your lips, and breathe in deeply through your mouth. Remove the inhaler and hold your breath for 10 seconds, after which you may slowly exhale. You may wish to rinse your mouth with water after using the inhaler, so as to prevent throat irritation or infection.
