Treating an enlarged prostate and high blood pressure | Terazosin | Terapress |
Uses
Terapress (Terazosin) is prescribed for a number of uses. It can be used to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a condition which causes urination problems due to the size of the prostate. By relaxing the prostate, this drug helps to relieve these symptoms. When used to treat high blood pressure, it blocks certain receptors in the blood vessels (called alpha receptors), which allows for a widening of the blood vessels, thereby making the blood flow easier. Sometimes patients may use this drug to treat kidney stones.
Dosage and Administration
Patients using Terapress (Terazosin) for the treatment of an enlarged prostate are sometimes told by their doctor to take 1mg per day before going to bed. The maintenance dose may vary, and is sometimes gradually increased by the prescribing doctor. Patients may be directed to take 2mg to 5mg per day as a maintenance dose, with 10mg a day necessary in some cases. The required dosage for high blood pressure is slightly different. After being prescribed an initial dose of 1mg per day, patients may be required to take a maintenance dose ranging from 1mg to 5mg per day, with the exact amount being decided by the doctor.
