Uses
Catapres (Clonidine) is a treatment for high blood pressure belonging to a group of drugs known as centrally-acting antihypertensive agents. This medicine is generally used in patients whose condition has not been effectively controlled with other drugs.
High blood pressure can occur as a result of narrow blood vessels. By reducing certain nerve signals sent from the brain to the blood vessels, this drug causes the blood vessels to widen, thereby decreasing the pressure inside the vessels, which results in a lowering of blood pressure. Patients have sometimes used this medicine to treat withdrawal symptoms caused by smoking, and to treat certain menopausal symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
The required dosage of Catapres (Clonidine) is determined by the prescribing doctor. You will require a medical assessment in order to determine whether or not treatment with this medicine is suitable for you. Adult patients may be told to take it 2 to 3 times per day, with each dose being taken at an evenly spaced interval. From time to time, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage. If this occurs, it is important that you strictly adhere to any new instructions provided to you. Remember that sudden cessation of treatment can cause withdrawal symptoms. To avoid this, your doctor may need to gradually reduce your dosage.
Side effects
Although not all patients who take Catapres (Clonidine) will experience side effects, adverse reactions are still possible and can range from mild to serious. Some examples of commonly reported reactions include:
If any side effects occur, you are advised to visit your doctor and discuss it with him or her in more detail, as this could be a sign of a more serious reaction. Immediate medical care is required if symptoms of a severe reaction are noticed, such as delusions, loss of hair, enlargement of the breast tissue in male patients, problems related to urination, breathlessness or any other symptoms which have not been listed here.
