Uses
Trental (Pentoxifylline) is primarily used in the treatment of intermittent claudication, and it works by improving the flow of blood in the arteries. This condition can occur as a result of peripheral vascular disease and causes symptoms such as muscular pain and aches, especially when exercising or walking. The active ingredient in this medicine is referred to as a haemorrheologic agent and its mode of action involves decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of the blood which in turn helps to prevent blood clot formation.
It also helps to increase red blood cell deformability. Other benefits include a widening of the blood vessels, which makes it easier for the blood to flow through the vessels, thereby allowing for more oxygen to be supplied to the tissues and muscles, leading to a reduction in cramps and aches and allowing the patient to increase their ability to walk or exercise without pain. A study was conducted to test it ability in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients affected by penile vascular disease.
Dosage and Administration
Trental (Pentoxifylline) is administered by mouth. These tablets contain 400mg of the active ingredient. Adult patients affected by intermittent claudication are sometimes instructed by their doctor to take a dosage that consists of 400mg, 3 times per day. However, the doctor providing treatment may decide to decrease the dosage to 400mg twice per day if side effects occur. In all cases, it is necessary to follow the instructions that your doctor provides you with. You must never exceed the recommended dosage.
