Uses
Zifi (Cefixime) is a type of broad spectrum antibiotic which is a 3rd generation cephalosporin. It works against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Conditions treated include gonorrhoea, pylonephritis, urinary tract infections, sinusitis, chest infections and many other commonly occurring bacterial infections. This antibiotic works against haemophilus influenzae, enterobacteriaceae, streptococcus pneumonia and a variety of other bacteria that produce beta lactamase. It acts by inhibiting a bacterial enzyme called transpeptidase, thereby preventing the formation of bacterial walls, which results in the eventual treatment of the infection.
Dosage and Administration
Patients undergoing treatment with Zifi (Cefixime) for a bacterial infection will have a dosage regimen individualised by their doctor, as the dosage required usually varies based on the condition being treated. This medicine comes as dispersible tablets which contain 100mg of the active ingredient. Adults treating otitis media, an uncomplicated urinary tract infection or bronchitis may be instructed to take 400mg once per day (or else 200mg at 12 hour intervals). The treatment period will be determined by the doctor. Other infections may need a different dosage, and in all cases, the exact amount of medicine to be taken will be decided by a doctor.
