Uses
Ampisyn (Ampicillin) is a penicillin antibiotic which works as a bactericidal agent, helping to kill those bacteria responsible for causing many different types of infection. With regard to its microbiology, a considerable amount of both gram negative and gram positive strains of bacteria are susceptible to it. Indications and common uses for this medicine include infections occurring in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and genitourinary tracts (including gonorrhoea).
It has also been used for meningitis that has been caused by bacteria, as well as septicaemia, bacterial endocarditis and salmonella infections. Other infections not listed here but deemed to be susceptible by a doctor may also be treated with it. This synthetic antibiotic's mechanism of action involves inhibiting the bacterial enzyme known as transpeptidase. Without this, the cell wall synthesis of the microorganisms is prevented. Eventually, the cells break down and are destroyed.
Dosage and Administration
Ampisyn (Ampicillin) comes as hard gelatine capsules which are swallowed with a glass of water. The strength of each capsule is 500mg. Individual factors will be taken into consideration when your doctor is deciding upon the correct dosage. The frequency of administration as well as the duration of treatment will depend on the seriousness of the infection. Adults treating gastroenteritis may be instructed to administer 500mg at 6 hour intervals.
Doctors may also tell those suffering from typhoid fever to take a similar dosage. Patients treating leptospirosis which is not serious in nature have sometimes been instructed to take 500mg to 750mg by mouth at 6 hour intervals. In all cases, completion of the medicine course is required in order to ensure that the infection is fully neutralized. Early withdrawal of treatment may lead to the infection returning.
Side effects
During treatment with Ampisyn (Ampicillin) capsules, patients may notice side effects, such as:
You should make your doctor aware of any side effects which occur during the course of treatment. Although the most commonly occurring side effects are mild in nature, there is still a possibility of more serious reactions affecting patients. You will need to attend the hospital straight away for emergency care if you suffer from seizures, persistent diarrhoea containing blood, problems related to urination, an uncomfortable sensation in the chest, bleeding from the nose or any other severe reactions that have not been listed here.
Precautions
If an infection is caused by a virus, this medicine will not work, as antibiotics are only active against bacteria. Your doctor will recommend a different type of medicine to treat your symptoms in the case of a viral infection.
Patients are normally told to take this medicine without food. Also, blood tests and other medical examinations may be ordered by your doctor during the course of treatment. Patients treating gonorrhoea may be directed to be checked for syphilis.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Ampisyn (Ampicillin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
