Uses
Ampisyn (Ampicillin) is a penicillin antibiotic which is said to be semisynthetic. It works by targeting the bacterial cell walls and destroying the bacteria. This medicine exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against gram positive and gram negative microorganisms, however penicillinase deactivates it, meaning that it may not work for infections caused by bacteria which produce penicillinase (such as pseudomonas aeruginosa and specific types of staphylococci). Doctors often conduct a laboratory test to find out which bacteria caused the infection.

Conditions treated include genitourinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, bacterial meningitis and pneumonia when these conditions are caused by strains of susceptible microorganisms. Other types of infections are also treated. This medicine functions by inhibiting transpeptidase, an enzyme which is essential for the bacteria. Without it, the synthesis of bacterial walls is not possible. Resulting from this, the contents of the cells leak out, resulting in the destruction of the bacteria.

Dosage and Administration
Ampisyn (Ampicillin) is provided as 250mg capsules for oral administration. The exact dosage will be individualised by the doctor, who will need to take the patients individual circumstances into account when determining an appropriate dosage regimen. It is possible that you may be directed by the doctor to administer the capsules on an empty stomach (meaning that it should be taken either 1 hour prior to eating or else 2 hours after food).

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Antibiotic treatment generally requires finishing the entire course of medicine, even if the symptoms of the infection appear to go away. Premature cessation could allow the bacteria to return, and this could complicate treatment.
