Uses
Ropinirole (Ropinirole Hydrochloride) is used for restless leg syndrome (RLS) and Parkinson's disease. It works by stimulating the dopamine receptors. Parkinson's disease affects the central nervous system, causing symptoms such as tremors, stiffness and speech problems. These symptoms are due to the degeneration of nerve cells which are responsible for body movements and dopamine production. The main ingredient in this medicine is known as a dopamine agonist.
It acts on the receptor sites in the brain that dopamine normally acts on, which results in the production of effects which are similar to dopamine, as well as the restoration of dopamine activity. As a result of this, symptoms of Parkinson's disease can be relieved. Patients may be given this medicine for use on its own (monotherapy) or else in combination with another type of medicine (levodopa). Other potential applications for this medicine have also been explored in a number of medical studies, including the treatment of antidepressant induced sexual dysfunction.
Dosage and Administration
Ropinirole (Ropinirole Hydrochloride) tablets each contain 0.25mg of the active ingredient. Follow the dosage instructions of your doctor, bearing in mind that weekly titration of the dosage may be necessary in order to achieve the desired effects. Patients treating Parkinson's disease may be told to take 0.25mg 3 times per day as an initial dose for the first week of treatment.
This may be increased by the doctor as follows: 0.5mg 3 times per day for week 2, 0.75mg 3 times per day for week 3 and 1mg 3 times per day for week 4. Any further adjustments will be decided by the doctor in charge of treatment based on the individual treatment goals. The dosage regimen for adults treating restless leg syndrome differs from that used to treat Parkinson's, and patients will need to follow the instructions of their doctor. It is usually taken once per day before bed, with the exact dosage differing due to individual factors.
