Tremors and muscle spasms Trihexyphenidyl Bexol

Uses
Bexol (Trihexyphenidyl) is used to treat tremors, stiff muscles, muscle spasms, abnormal nerve impulsiveness and a lack of proper muscle control in patients who are suffering from Parkinson's disease. It may also be given to patients who experience similar symptoms when taking drugs to treat psychiatric disorders, as medicines such as chlorpromazine can sometimes cause these symptoms.

The main ingredient in this drug is a type of anticholinergic medication, which stops the action of a neurotransmitter in the brain called acetylcholine. As a result of this, patients with Parkinson's disease may experience a reduction in symptoms such as sweating, salivation and stiff muscles. Patients taking psychiatric medication may be treated for severe muscular spasms or muscle stiffness, however, it will not treat symptoms cause by tardive dyskinesia, and is not used for this purpose.

Dosage and Administration
Adults taking Bexol (Trihexyphenidyl) tablets to treat Parkinson's disease are sometimes instructed by their doctor to start out by taking 1mg per day. The doctor may decide to increase the dosage in 2mg increments, with an interval of 3 to 5 days between each adjustment.

The usual dose is 6mg to 10mg per day, taken as 3 to 4 separate doses, however, doctors have sometimes instructed patients to take doses of 12mg to 15mg per day. If used with levodopa, a different dosage regimen is usually needed. Patients treating tremors and other symptoms caused by psychiatric medication should only take the amount of medicine their doctor tells them to take.

Side effects
Taking Bexol (Trihexyphenidyl) might cause side effects, such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Enlarged pupils
  • Feeling anxious
  • A reduction in perspiration

Tell your doctor about any side effects you experience during treatment. Stop taking this medicine and see your doctor as soon as possible if you notice hallucinations, pain in the eyes, seizures, fever, hyperactive behaviour or any other serious side effects.

Precautions
Sudden cessation of treatment after this medicine has been taken for an extended period of time is not advised by doctors, as it may cause the return or symptoms. When treating is being stopped, doctors may recommend a gradual reduction of the dosage.

If you are currently affected by or have ever suffered from liver disease, kidney disease, heart problems, myasthenia gravis, medical conditions involving blood pressure, urinary illnesses, prostate problems or any illnesses affecting the stomach, you must tell your doctor before taking this medicine.
