Rasalect

Uses
Rasalect (Rasagiline) is used to treat Parkinson's disease. It exhibits neuroprotective activity and can also alleviate the motor symptoms associated with PD. Patients affected by this neurodegenerative disorder suffer from tremors, bradykinesia (slowed body movements), speech changes, balance problems, stiff muscles and other symptoms. The condition progresses and worsens over time, however treatment can lead to an improvement for some patients.

Studies have shown that these motor disabilities occur as a result of the dopaminergic neurons becoming lost. This causes a reduction in the amount of dopamine in the body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which plays a vital role in the nervous system and the brain. This medicine works by augumenting the levels of dopamine in the striatum. As a direct result of this, the symptoms of Parkinson's disease can be reduced. These tablets are sometimes used alongside another type of medicine (levodopa), however doctors may also tell patients to use it on its own.

Dosage and Administration
Rasalect (Rasagiline) tablets are administered orally. Visit your doctor before starting treatment so that the correct and most suitable dosage can be determined. Doctors often tell patients who are being given this medicine as an adjunctive treatment (alongside levodopa) to begin with 0.5mg (one tablet) per day. However, if the doctor is not satisfied with the clinical response, the dosage may be adjusted and the patient may be instructed to take 1mg per day. Your doctor will also tell you how much levodopa to take every day (if the patient is being treated with levodopa). Never take more than your doctor tells you to.

Side effects
Rasalect (Rasagiline) may cause:

• Vertigo
• Impotence
• A slight headache
• Soreness in the joints
• Weight loss and poor appetite

If any side effects are noticed during treatment with this medicine, ensure that you inform your doctor. Medical assistance will be necessary straight away if you suffer from signs of very high blood pressure, strange behavioural changes, hallucinations, unusual reflexes, seizures or any other serious side effects that have not been listed here.

Precautions
This medicine could cause severe drug reactions if certain medicines have been taken within the last 14 days, or if taken alongside other medicines (such as MAO inhibitors). Your doctor will wish to known all medicines you have been taken before you can start treatment.

Certain patients may experience abnormal sexual behaviour or gambling urges when treated with medicines for Parkinson's disease. Tell your doctor straight away if this happens.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Rasalect (Rasagiline) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
