Uses
Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) is used to treat patients for Parkinson's disease, a condition which can cause movement difficulties, tremors and rigidity. Depleted levels of a neurotransmitter known as dopamine (which is important in helping the body and nerves to function normally) in the corpus striatum is believed to be responsible for the occurrence of the negative effects that Parkinson's disease has on skeletal muscle control and mobility.
After this medication is taken, the body quickly decarboxylates the levodopa (one of the active ingredients) to dopamine. This can result in improved movement and relief from other symptoms. The other ingredient in this medicine (carbidopa) helps to ensure that a higher amount of levodopa reaches the brain, and can also lessen nausea and vomiting (side effects of levodopa), and make it easier for the doctor to determine the correct dosage.
Dosage and Administration
Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) is a combination medicine. Each tablet contains 25mg of carbidopa and 100mg of levodopa (at a ratio of 1:4). The doctor will need to closely monitor the patient during treatment, so as to observe any possible signs of a worsening of symptoms. The dosage may then be carefully adjusted, so as to find a suitable amount. If any other medicines for the treatment of Parkinson's disease have been prescribed, the doctor will need to take this into account when deciding the correct dosage. It is essential to fully obey any dosage instructions given by your doctor.
Side effects
There is a possibility that patients taking Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) may notice some side effects, such as:
Patients who experience side effects should inform their doctor. It is also important to be aware of the risk of severe reactions. Any patient who experiences seizures, tremors which are worse than before, painful urination or any other serious side effects which have not been listed here will need immediate medical treatment.
