Uses
Rasalect (Rasagiline) is indicated for use in patients with the neurodegenerative condition Parkinson's disease. Its mode of action is increasing the levels of extracellular dopamine. The main ingredient in this drug belongs to a class of medications referred to as monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors. By selectively inhibiting the action of an enzyme called MAO-B in the stratium, it helps to irreversibly prevent the metabolism and breakdown of dopamine, which in turn leads to an increase in the levels of dopamine.
This is important in the treatment of Parkinson's, as there is believed to be a link between depleted dopamine levels and the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, due to the essential role that dopamine plays in nervous transmission. Some patients may be given this medication together with levodopa, as part of a combined treatment designed to lengthen the effects of levodopa, thereby preventing a deterioration of its effects. However, it may also be used for monotherapy.
Dosage and Administration
Rasalect (Rasagiline) tablets contain 1mg of the active ingredient, and are administered by mouth. The correct dosage will differ from patient to patient, and it will need to be individualized by the doctor providing treatment. Usually, adult patients undergoing monotherapy with this medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's disease may be directed to take 1mg, once every day. However, this may differ for certain patients, and it will be necessary to strictly adhere to the dosage instructions that your doctor provides you with.
