Uses
Apo-Ropinirole (Ropinirole Hydrochloride) provides relief from Parkinson's disease symptoms. Its mechanism of action is related to the stimulation of dopamine receptors in the brain. Patients may be given this medicine as monotherapy or else in combination with levodopa (another medicine used for Parkinson's). It can even improve the effectiveness of levodopa. Parkinson's disease causes patients to become stiff and unsteady. Tremors are also common and in some cases, it may be difficult to move (on-off syndrome).
These symptoms occur due to a disturbance in the brain which affects the nerve cells responsible for movement. The active ingredient in this medicine is known as a dopamine agonist. Unlike other medicines used for Parkinson's, conversion to dopamine does not occur when it is absorbed by the body.
Instead, it acts on the dopamine receptors and causes the restoration of dopamine activity in the brain, which helps to correct the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's. Another indication for this medicine is Ekbom syndrome (also known as restless leg syndrome or RLS). It works for this condition by lowering the urge to move the legs and relieving discomfort.
Dosage and Administration
Apo-Ropinirole (Ropinirole Hydrochloride) tablets contain 2mg of the active ingredient. However, your doctor will recommend gradual titration of the dosage. In some cases, patients may be told to start out with a dosage of 0.25mg, taken 3 times per day. After this initial period, the recommended changes will be gradually made by your doctor so that the therapeutic response can be maintained. Always follow the instructions that your doctor provides you with.
